Bread and Butter Pickles

Pickles that I don't process. I always allow to stand twelve hours or more without moving to be sure the seal is complete before I do move them. I seldom have any.
Slice cucumbers as thin as possible. Chop peppers and onions then combine with sliced cucumbers and salt, let stand three hours. Drain and discard liquid.
Combine sugar, mustard seed, and ground cloves in a large preserving kettle. Add drained cucumbers and peppers. Heat thoroughly, but do not boil, just bring to boiling point.
Pack while hot into sterilized jars and seal at once. Yields 20 pints.
